壮志千秋是一部剧情,西部片，故事发生在美国西部大开发时期，燕西（理查德·迪克斯 Richard Dix 饰）带着妻子莎布拉（艾琳·邓恩 Irene Dunne 饰）千里昭昭来到了广袤而又荒芜的俄克纳马拉，心里怀揣着远大的理想，希望能够在这里做出一番建树。 　　俄克纳马拉的生活环境十分艰苦和险峻，然而，夫妻两人同心协力，慢慢改善和建立着他们的家园。在日子渐渐稳定的过程中，在当地生活的牧场主们感到他们的利益受到了侵犯，他们常常会找燕西的麻烦，却又被燕西用智慧巧妙的化解。燕西十分同情在当地生活的印第安土著，与此同时，嫉恶如仇的燕西亦对压迫和剥削原住民的资本家们充满了仇恨，随着时间的推移，双方的矛盾渐渐尖锐起来。

When the government opens up the Oklahoma territory for settlement, restless Yancey Cravat claims a plot of the free land for himself and moves his family there from Wichita. A newspaperman, lawyer, and just about everything else, Cravat soon becomes a leading citizen of the boom town of Osage. Once the town is established, however, he begins to feel confined once again, and heads for the Cherokee Strip, leaving his family behind. During this and other absences, his wife Sabra must learn to take care of herself and soon becomes prominent in her own right.
